Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune condition involving multiple organs in the body. It commonly affects the kidneys and leads to development of lupus nephritis. Diagnosis of lupus nephritis usually involves kidney biopsy (procedure to remove a small piece of kidney tissue that can be examined under microscope). This is of done under local anaesthetic.
